Isabelle Maryns

Isabelle Maryns — Technician
Joined the group in 2021

Isabelle Maryns is a molecular biologist and started her career as a scientist involved in several internal and external projects within the agrochemical and pharmaceutical research divisions of Devgen, a biotech company focusing on the nematode C. elegans as a model system for human diseases.

When Devgen closed its pharma division specialized in developing preclinical drug candidates to treat inflammatory diseases, Isabelle became active in the field of white biotechnology, focusing on the metabolic engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for the generation of a production platform for specialty carbohydrates.

In 2021, Isabelle joined professor Yves Van de Peer's laboratory (Department of Plant Biotechnology and Bioinformatics) to study the mechanistic underpinnings and applications of polyploidy through genomics, experimental evolution, modeling and artificial intelligence. More specifically, she’s working at the ILVO site in Melle on making new species hybrids which are more resistant to extreme conditions, such as drought, global warming and the changing climate.
